Holding Your Breath

For those who work in areas where you aren't the only pony in the region. Have you ever listened /followed on the radio another program that picks up a job you turned down for weather? It is quite sobering to hear them change their destination hospital then after pt. transfer be unable to get back into their base and then hightail it back to the pad they just came from. It has to be a competitive mentality that blinds judgement. It's frightening to hear someone call dispatch at 2 am and say they're gonna do some training minutes after calling inbound to their base, could it be they're trying to circumvent that blob on the radar that was destined to pop up exactly when it did? I hope any of us that are in a position to monitor those around us do so and use it as an educational experience. Still not a fan of helicopter shopping, doesn't mean it's always bad, just mostly.

We are the only IFR program in our state, so we pickup all of the flights that the other programs can't do.
Don't really follow other programs radio traffic as far as weather turn-downs. However, we been requested to fly patients when the "other" programs turned it down because of "weather" when we all know it was BS because there has been numerous times when AWOS was clear state wide and nothing in the forecast.
IMO It was because there was not an aircraft available (for whatever the reason) and it is an easy cop-out to blame it on the weather. It's funny to hear the hospital staff or EMS say, "So-and-so could fly because of the weather, so why could you?" It's usually an interesting and informative conversation with them that follows..........

Hmmmmmmm training minutes at 2AM? The only time we have "trained" at 2AM was coming back to the airport and was practicing ILS approach.

...and NVG evolutions if needed for currency.
