   Southwest Medevac

On Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, three Southwest Medevac crew members were killed in a helicopter crash on Fort Bliss near El Paso, TX. On board were pilot William Montgomery and flight paramedics John Sutter and Anthony Archuleta.

This guest book is open for anyone that would like to offer their messages of support. Please remember not to ask questions or be critical of the circumstances regarding this incident.

John,

As for my friends, I will hold them close.
As for strangers, I will meet their eyes with mine.
As for my colleagues, I will shake their hands.
As for my family, I will tell them I love them.
As for those who return to the place they belong, I will say "Welcome Home."

-These are the things I learned from your life.

If God made us in his image, then we got our ability to make mistakes from him.

-This is what I learned from your death.

John and Anthony, I had the great pleasure of flying with both of you throughout my Medevac career. Anthony, you were so kind and layed back, and you made me laugh, and we got to talking about our kids and their antics and we tried to one up each other. We both just gave up as we knew kids will be kids.
John, you touched my heart on so many levels, you were so caring and giving of yourself. Ed and I needed someone to help me move my grandparents furniture into their apartment, and you and Joe both jumped at the opportunity to help, then you laughed so hard when my grandpa sat on the couch and cracked jokes. As a paramedic you were the best, and as a friend I couldn't ask for anyone better. I am blessed that Ed and I attended your wedding to stephanie, you two were the epitomy of true love. God bless you and God Speed!

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

My condolences to all the family, friends and fellow air medical providers.

I had the great fortune of working with Anthony for many years on the ambulance in Brighton, CO. It seems like when someone dies people always say what a great person they were. Well, I can tell you with Anthony it's not just sentiment. He truly was one of the finest persons I have ever met in my life. You will be missed by the many people you have touched by your presence on this Earth.

John,

You were my best friend for many years. I was so blessed to know you. From the first day of medic school when we met I was always impressed by you. That year you and I took a lot of flack for being the youngest in our class. You took alot more flack than I did and you took all in stride. It seems like a lifetime ago that you sat trapped between Teague and I as we constantly cut up and you ended up in as much trouble as we did even though the only thing you were guilty of was being stuck sitting by us.

As if being in medic school were not enough, you and I sat through what had to be the longest fire academy in history. In the fire academy your personality really began to shine. You spent lots of extra time teaching me all the things you already knew as a firefighter. That is also where I was blessed enough to really get to know Bec and Mom who have always embraced me as family. At the Dona Ana station I really had the oportunity to learn what special people you and your family are.

I guess medic and fire school weren't enough of each other so we dragged each other to the police department. You and I spent hours patrolling and I was so fortunate to develop the friendship I built with you. Everytime I talked with you I learned something. You taught me so much about integrity, compassion, and how crucial it is that those you serve with must be protected at all costs, even at the cost of yourself.

Over the years the very people that teased you for being so young when we were in medic school have come to respect you and even look up to you, I know I have. You are truely the model of what most paramedics, most police officers, and most fire fighters... no thats not right; you are truely the model of what most MEN spend their entire life trying to be. You are a hero, you have always been, as long as I've known you.  The citizens of Dona Ana County and the public safety professionals you have worked with are all better because of all that you gave them. Even if when you were not even trying.

I wish you were here today so that I could tell you the thank yous I never did. I will never forget the lessons you taught me. I carry them with me and will never forget them. Because of you I know you never leave a man behind. Because of you I know that you never let go of a handcuff (I still have the scar on my chin from when you taught me that in training). You taught me that perfection is not good enough and that those we serve deserve more. Of all that you taught me, the most important lesson was that integrity is the most important atribute a man can possess.

I hope that at the end of my life I will have evolved into half the man you were years ago.

I miss you you dearly my friend, the world will never be the same without you.

Anthony

I will always remember your smileing face looking down to us on a call asking "what can I do for you.." John I will miss you.....

I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says, " There she goes! "
Gone where?
Gone from my sight . . . that is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.
And just at the moment when someone at my side says, " There she goes! " there are other eyes watching her coming . . . and other voices ready to take up the glad shout . . . " Here she comes! "
(Henry Van Dyke, A PARABLE OF IMMORTALITY)

The Broken Chain
Submitted by: litlebakergrl
Author: Unknown/ popular poem

We little knew that day,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death, we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

The Flight After Theirs

The rotors spin up and the turbine whines, our hearts beat faster as if in time. As the skids leave earth and the world descends, I say a prayer for my fallen friends.

They left on a flight exactly like this, to help save a life out there in distress. They knew of the risks and they knew of the dangers, still they went out to help save a stranger.

So onward I fly into the night, as I think of all those who have laid down their life. Performing a job to which few can compare, rising like hummingbirds into the air.

They are not just Medics, Pilots and Nurses, doing a job to fill up their purses. To do this job you must love the game, and once you have done it you are never the same.

They are all with us on this flight, I feel them near as we fly through the night. Darkness around us and darkness below, but out there beside us I see a faint glow.

They have traded their wings of carbon and steel, for wings of light, and on they fly still. With us forever in heart, mind, and soul, for helping others was always their goal.

Some call them Heroes, and indeed the name fits, but I‘m not sure they would think much of it. For Hero is not a title they liked, they preferred “Friend” or “Daddy” or “Wife”.

This is the hardest thing I have ever had to write, and I never thought I would have to write it.
Stephanie and family: I was honored to be your husbands partner for two years. He taught me so very much about everything, and for those lessons in life, love, and integrity I am eternally grateful. The room was always brighter when John smiled. His laugh was contagious, and his love for you and Ryan Stephanie were undeniable. No matter how short the conversation, it always turned to you and the baby. John talked about you, and how proud he was of you. He was so excited about "Baby Boy Sutter" that words would not do it justice. John taught me how to be a Medic, a husband, a man, and a friend, not by words but by example. John will forever be a hero to me.
To Mrs Archuleta: I remember the times that I was on shift with Anthony. He usually had his laptop in the living room, while watching whatever the pilot had on. When he knew you were coming however, his eyes were glued to the window. He was always so excited to see you. Anthony was an incredible man. He was kind, sincere, and loyal. He described you as "his best friend" to me more than once. I hope that you know how much you meant to him.
I don't know what else to say except I miss them. A part of me is missing, and the men I served with are the only ones who could fill it.
God Bless

It has taken me a few days to be able to write this; I am so saddened by the loss of my teammates and my friends.
To you Mrs. Archuleta, I have not had the pleasure to meet you, but I had the honor and privilege to have known Anthony. He came so us here at Southwest Med Evac an eager and excited Paramedic from Colorado, He brought personality and passion with him; I could see the joy and happiness he had when he was in his new hire class, he was excited to learn the critical care medicine needed to be the best Flight Paramedic he could be. He was so excited about being able to fly and he exemplifies what we all strive to be in making the difference in the lives of those that call for our help. I will miss Anthony’s smile and the calm way he carried himself. I am proud to have known Anthony and know he was doing what he loved to do.
To Rebecca and Joe Catron; Mom, Mark and Stephanie Sutter, I hope that you all know what John has meant to me, and all of us that have had the great honor to have known John. Those of us that have had the privilege to work with John over the years are better people and EMS professionals from that experience. John was a great Flight Paramedic a great person, friend and a family man. I will miss John every day, I will remember the great times we had, the calls we ran together, the sad times we had, and the laughs we had over the years. John will live on in the lives he has touched, the patients he saved and the many friends he has. He may be gone from us but he will never be forgotten
Proverbs 18:24 says

I write this with a heavy heart and damaged soul. This is truly tragic and the world just lost a few outstanding people.
To John and his family,
My family is here whenever you need us and you know that. I have never met a more compassionate, caring and loving family in my life until I met the Sutters. John was a person who not only was a great medic but a true family man and it is beyond sad that he will not be around for his little one on the way but we all know it will definitely carry on John and what he was about. I cant wait until I have the honor of meeting the little one.
I will always remember our long talks about work and life in general while we were going back and forth to El Paso to set up Medevac 17.
Kathleen, we love you and ALL of your family and John will not be forgotten.
To Anthony and his family,
I first remember Anthony when he moved here and I helped with his orientation class with SWME. I knew the first day I met him that he was a kind hearted and hard working man where family came first. You never heard but good things about Anthony in every aspect of his life. He is definitely one of the nicest people I ever met. He always did what was asked of him and never complained about anything because that's how he was and he will not be forgotten.
God bless all three crew members and we will be praying for the families.

Prayers will continue to flow your way through this time and we will mourn with you for the loss of your loved one and our fellow "family" members in this wonderful life that we live called HEMS!

We believe our requirement and most is along different lines, so to this crew and their family ....your MOST was and is the ultimate sacrifice. I am home in heaven, dear ones; Oh so happy and so bright1There is perfect joy and beauty in this everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over. Every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, Safely home in heaven at last. Did you wonder how i so calmly trod the valley of the shadow? Oh but jesus love illumined every dark and fearful glade And he came himself to meet me.in that way so hard to tread; And with jesus arm to lean on, Could i have one doubt or dread? Then you must not grieve so sorely, For i love you dearly still; Try to look beyond earth's shadow's Pray to trust our fathers will. There is work still waiting for you, So you must not idly stand; Do it now, while life remains you shall rest in jesus land. When that work is all completed, he will gently call you home; Oh the rapture of that meeting,oh the joy to see you come! Three angles have been called home to continue their work in heaven.

To the crew of SWME:
Your selflessness and dedication to help others in need will never be forgotten. I will never forget how honest and sweet you were to me, Anthony when I met you the first time at training. You were an inspiration and a role model. Your dedication to your family shined through every day.

John - I'll never forget when you ran around a town you didn't know (in the snow) and got me and Stephanie lunch during our national registry testing. You helped me through a transition time while I was in Las Cruces and you will not be forgotten.

Godspeed to the crew. My condolences to the families and friends of these wonderful men.

I was honored to have graduated medic school with John 15 years ago. We worked together for many years and grew up in the same system. He was a superior medic and simply a good, genuine person. John and his family were my family, along with all our co-workers. His spirit and pride in his work will live on forever. Anthony, though I only met him a few times, was a quiet, gentle soul, completely selfless and it was great to know him. I am so sorry for the loss of the Southwest MedEvac 17 crew, John, Anthony and Bill. All my thoughts and prayers are with the crew's friends and family. Godspeed 17!
