   AirEvac

On Dec 15, 2004, an Air Evac Services helicopter crashed in Apache Junction, Arizona, killing flight paramedic Renee Johnson and injuring Pilot Susanna Corcoles and Flight Nurse Kelly Foster-Stopka. Please use this area to leave any messages of support and sympathy for the family and crew members.

This guest book is open for anyone that would like to offer their messages of support. Please remember not to ask questions or be critical of the circumstances regarding this incident.

Our heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to Kelly, Susanna, and Renee's family. Please know that we are keeping you close to our hearts.

Veda Rohr, RN and Doug Rohr, NREMT-P
Native Air Services, RMFD - Mesa, Arizona

From everyone at Aureus International, we send our sincere condolences to the family of Renee Johnson. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this loss. Words are never enough at times like these, but after reading some of the comments about Renee you can see she was loved very much.
To the Air Evac family- You are also in our prayers for you have lost a great friend as well. Stay close and be there for each other for that is what families do at times like this.
We wish a speedy and full recovery to Susanna Corcoles and Kelly Foster-Stopka. This is a time when you must heal physically, and also mentally. You have lost a close and dear friend. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers as well.

Aureus International - Enterprise, Alabama

Renee will be greatly missed. She was a great roomate, friend, and cook. Her family will be in my prayers. Renee, this is not good-bye. We will see you again.

Susanna, you should know, at this moment, there are many who are concerned about you, your crew, and their family and friends. We are very saddened to hear of the loss of Renee Johnson. You all will remain in our continued thoughts of hope and healing from this unfortunate incident.

Matt Steele

Our sincerest condolonces for your loss. May God be with you during this time of sadness and pain. May you find peace in knowing that Renee gave the ultimate sacrifice for her passion and her calling. May the surviving crew members be comforted and know that one day soon, they will again respond to aid those in need of help, and continue to answer their calling.

Aaron York, Flight Officer/Paramedic
California Highway Patrol - Air Operations - Sacramento, CA

I lost my daughter and grand daughter in an accident last year. There is nothing that can be said to bring comfort at times like that, or at your loss. We had the gift of their presence too briefly- but we had it- and that's ours forever.

I never met Doreen Renee Johnson, but I'm honored to say I work with her colleaugues every day. They are people who save lives with their skills and above all- their willingness to help. The world is a poorer place at her loss, but richer because of her.

Walter E
Emory Flight - Jefferson, GA

Words are inadequate to express my condolences. To Renee's family, I am so very sorry for your loss. I can only imagine your pain and grief. Know that, for those of us who do this job, we are aware of the risks and take them in order to serve and to do a job we love. How blessed Renee is to have had the opportunity to do what she loved in life. To Susanna, get well soon. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Those of us who fly love and trust our pilots and we respect your training and ability. Get back in that helicopter as soon as you are able. You have a gift to fly, use it. To Kelly, you must be a remarkable woman. I read your interview after the crash, and your attitude is incredible. You, like most of the women in the profession of flight medicine, are strong and brave. Get well soon. Susuanna and Kelly, I would fly with either of you anytime! Blessings. To the team at Air Evac Services, those of us at PHI Air Medical Indiana understand that you are "family" and our love goes out to you in this time of loss. May you stay brave, strong and dedicated to serving and may your hearts heal. May you learn from this tragedy and move forward better and more skilled than ever. Blessings.

Claudia Burrows, AS, BGS, NREMT-P, Flight Paramedic
PHI Air Med 33 - Anderson, Indiana

I cannot do or say anything to make your pain go away. I always thought that helicopter crashes " only happened to others". Unfortunately, only several hours after watching "COPS" and horsing around, One of my friends was in O.R.. My other two friends would never return from the mission. The survivor was the nurse, who provides hope and a vision for the crew. Without him, there would be less direction, if any at all. The guardian angels spared his life that day so his wife told me- and I believed her. I believe that they were there for your two crew members. However, your medic had a higher calling- now she will fly with the guardian angels to protect all of us.God Bless.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families of this tragedy. May the Lord give us strength and hope to get through this difficult time. God bless us all.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Renee's family. This is a very sad time for all of us at Air Evac Services and Southwest but one message I have heard consistently this week from the Air Evac and Southwest Ambulance families is that they not only considered it a privilege to work alongside Renee but also a privilege to have known her and to have enjoyed her infectious enthusiasm and warm friendship. She wil be greatly missed.
Renee, keep an eye on us, we will continue on in your spirit.

Linda A. Meiner, RNC

There will never be words to comfort those effected by this tragedy. But know our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to your family, those injured, and especially the family of the paramedic lost. We're a tight knit group, the top of our game...it'll ALWAYS be a GREAT Loss. I'm so very sorry! Unfortunately we know the pain involved as we lost three of our own recently...friends & colleagues I'll NEVER forget. May you find comfort in God!

Renees beautiful smile and EMS skills will be greatly missed. I attended training classes with her. We have all been affected by her life and death. She is truely an Angel. Keep us safe. Kelly and I worked together for almost 4 yrs at Sun Care Air Ambulance, we were based in Parker, Az. We became friends. When she had to work Christmas, she and her husband Wayne had dinner with my family. What wonderful, fun loving people. Kelly has always been there for me with a kind word and encouragment when I have been through hard times. I can only hope that I can be of some comfort to her now. Suzanna has a reputation as being an exception pilot and kind person. My good wishes to all involved. Speedy recovery. Lets not forget the EMS, Fire and Law enforcment on scene of the accident, I wish you all well. Your efforts that night were not in vain.

Renee I miss you already, more than words will be able to describe. I miss your morning hugs, smiles and warm hello's, even in the midst of summer. I miss seeing you at crew change at both Southwest Ambulance and AirEvac 2.

Renee was the most honest, sincere, humble, devoted and sweetest individual I have ever known. She died doing what she loved and was most passionate about, flying, helping people and being part of a team/family.

You were the sister I never had, the friend everyone wanted to have, and the person that could cheer anyone up with that smile and the best hugs around. Your energy will live at our AirEvac base, at our Southwest Station in Maricopa, and in the memories you have left us all with.

We retired our AirEvac number in your honor, not to forget you but to aid in the healing of such a devastating loss, instead of Deuces Wild think of us as The Crazy Eight ( AE-8 Williams Gateway Airport )

I was on duty at Gateway the night of the crash, I work for Native Air. I can tell you this, it does not matter what color your flight suite is or who you work for. When something like this happens,we come together as a whole. I know Kelly and have flown with her at a diffrent company. She is one of the best. The other 2 people involved in the crash are also tops in the profession. Our hearts and prayers go out to everybody involved. I also believe that Dorreen will not only be watching out for her fellow co-workers but everyone that ever steps into a aircraft to make a diffrence in someones life. Its a sad day for flight crews but a good day for the angels for who they have recieved.

One is never quite ready to see FlightWeb blacked out once again. It seems as though it happens when you least expect; it is never easy to see. From mch CareStar in Odessa, Tx, our deepest and sincere condolences go out to our extended family in Arizona. Renee Johnson has joined her colleagues Paul Lujan and Mickey Price. They along with many other dedicated and extraordinarily terrific people have given the ultimate sacrifice an air medical professional can make. We will continue to do our duty in silent respect for our fallen comrades. We will always strive to honor their memory in our every day work. We will never forget their dedication and "bar" they have set, as Jeff described it so well. Our prayers go out to Susanna Corcoles and Kelly Foster-Stopka for a speedy recovery, and warm comfort to them and all of Air Evac's family in this time of tragedy.

No one has an answer for why we get into a helicopter and do the job we do, there simply is no need for an explanation. It is an internal drive that most of us cannot explain, yet all of us understand each other...

My deepest sympathies for everyone at Air Evac. I cannot imagine the grief and loss you feel. Please know everyone is here for you, whether we are still prehospital providers or not. As a former Air Evac Flight Nurse, I have always felt you can take the person out of the aircraft, but you will NEVER take the aircraft out of the person.

Although I never did meet Renee, Kelly or Susanna, all the messages left provide an exceptionally clear focus of who they really are: dedicated professionals and amazing people, people I would love to have met in my flight path...I suppose someday I will.

My sincere condolences to Renee's family and friends and my greatest wishes to Kelly and Susanna for a quick recovery both physically and spiritually. It's so obvious you are SO well loved. That's what being part of a family is really all about...not only your loved ones and friends, but also your family you have never met: all the front line personnel: EMS, police, fire, ER staff, the list is endless.....

When I started my nursing career as a new grad in the CVICU, 2D, at Good Sam in Phoenix, I met many of the flight crews from what was then Samaritan Air Evac. "The best in the business" I thought to myself and set my goals to be a flight nurse. They inspired me then and still, after seven years of being a flight nurse, the flight crews from PHI Air Evac inspire me now. I extend my most sincere condolences to everyone affected by this tragic incident. May God give you the strength to carry on. And to the two survivors, I extend my thoughts and prayers for your recovery. Kelly, your interview was humbling to read and I pray for you now and when you return to the flight line.

I was sleeping that night, when the phone rang just after midnight. I was thinking, who could be calling at this time of night. When I heard the voice of my fellow Comm Spec, I know something was wrong. He said that there had been an accident and it was not good. When I heard that Renee was no longer with us I was devistated. And to hear that Susanna and Kelly were severely injured as well, left me in complete shock. I thought how could this happen to us.
Although I never met Renee, I know that she must have been an absolute Angel. To be able to get in the helicopter and go to whatever the call was, at any instance, it takes a lot to be a Flight Team member.
My condolences go out the Renee's family and to the families of Kelly and Susanna. I can not wait until the day that we hear your voices on the radio again.
Renee, You will always be remembered.

While I never knew Ms. Renee Johnson, I do know that spirit and desire to help others, regardless of loss or consequence that Renee obviously possessed. There is no doubt that she will be sorely missed by those that were near to her, as well as those that were to need her in the future. Brothers and Sisters left behind at AirEVAC Services stand strong and take comfort from the fact that you had the privilege of knowing and loving Renee during her short time here. She lived and died doing what she was, of that there is no doubt. As the late Dr. Martin Luther King, JR said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?" She left you all while she was indeed 'doing for others.'

Our deepest thoughts are with you all here from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Transport Team.

J. Eric Woods
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta - Atlanta, Georgia

When I recieved a phone call at 3am Wednesday morning at Georgia home I knew something was wrong. As I listened to the voice, tears filled my eyes and my heart felt heavy. I spent from 1997 to 2003 with individuals that became my second family. We learned, played & cried together. I learned from those that are the best in the business. Now with accomplishments and growth there brings sorrow. As we do this job we see what can happen and can hope that or strength in prayer and faith will help us deal with the actions of what took place.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Susanna or Kelly, but I do remember Renee, her smile would light up a room, her attitude was plus. I will miss you Renee, take the heavens by storm and help keep us in line. Susanna and Kelly I wish you a quick recovery and know that we are here for you. To the families of Renee, Susanna & Kelly our thoughts and prayers are with you.

To my Airevac family, I love you all and I miss you. Let your strength and family goals get through this.

My 17 years with Air Evac Communications have blessed me with a second family. Now I have to say goodbye to our little sister in my second family. Renee, I will miss hearing your voice during radio checks and your giggle on the phone asking for your times. "Time" will be a precious thing to me from now on. Susanna, you are an awsome pilot (Ken, get her back on the stick when she's ready). Kelly, you are an Angel! May you all find comfort in God's arms. My prayers are to everyone in my BIG family.

As a former Army DUSTOFF Medic, I was always aware of the potential for disaster on every mission. It is still a shock when a helocopter goes down on a mission.

While I never had the pleasure of meeting any of this crew, I do know someone who knew them. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who knew and worked with Medic Johnson, and prayers for the swift and save recovery of Pilot Corcoles and Nurse Stopka and their families.

Cheri Paronto - Chief Paramedic
TriState CareFlight - Bullhead City, Arizona

Every paramedic that has done “the job” for a while has a level of confidence that borders on arrogance. Some might say it’s an attitude of Supremacy of Position. Call it what you will, but it is there. It needs to be there. It’s essential to the makeup of a paramedic. For to be good as a medic, you have to hold on to that arrogance. You sit in crew quarters, or the front of a bus, or on the rescue, and you do nothing. But you have to be able to go from zero to 100 miles an hour in short order. You need the ability to be asleep one minute, and contemplating treatment options for life threatening injuries the next.

That’s what we do as medics. If you want to be good… if you want to be the best, you need that arrogance. It’s what allows you to stand toe-to-toe with the Grim Reaper and say “OK, pal… Let’s dance.”

So when I walked into the classroom on my first day of orientation and training at Air Evac Services, I naturally felt a measure of confidence. And I looked at my new co-worker Renee, and asked myself “How good is she, really?” Six weeks later, I had my answer.

She wasn’t just good. She was excellent. She set a new standard for “excellent.” The bar of excellence has been set, and it’s time for you to see if you can reach it.

While I’ve met many excellent medics in my years on the streets in various places, I’ve only ever met one Renee. You see, she wasn’t just excellent in her IV skills. That would have been easy to handle: “Yeah, sure… she can start a line, but her cardiology skills aren’t strong.” That approach didn’t work with Renee. She was excellent in cardiac too. But even that wouldn’t have been such a problem, as I could have justified it with an “OK, sure, but how’s her insight into deeper system issues?”

The thing is this: Renee was excellent as a medic in every regard. She was an excellent clinician, with cognitive and psychomotor skills beyond compare. She was excellent when it came to looking at a problem and seeing the multitude of levels to that problem. She was excellent when creating solutions to problems, as her insight allowed her to visualize the strengths and weaknesses of each solution.

Renee’s personal attitude was as infectious as any pathogen… you couldn’t help but be in a good mood around her, as the smile was a permanent fixture, the laugh was constant, and the kind words never ceased.

But perhaps most importantly, Renee was excellent when it came to giving her patients a sense of security, comfort, and ease. Her bedside manner was one worthy of the envy of every medical professional across the world.

So it is with much sadness, and a great deal of grief, that I mourn the passing of Renee Johnson, Flight Paramedic. Renee was killed in a terrible helicopter crash on Tuesday, December 14th, 2004, while responding to help someone she’d never met. The fact that she had never met the patient, and would probably never meet the patient again, didn’t matter. That’s what Renee did… give to others, without second thoughts.

The discussion of helicopter use in prehospital medicine is raging, and there are no clear answers. This much IS clear, however: There are people in this world like Renee who stand willing every day to risk their life to save another. That’s something that can’t be measured by a “p-value” or by a “Chi-Square Analysis.”

If you ever get hurt, and you need help, you might take some measure of comfort knowing that Renee’s spirit lives on in every flight medic and flight nurse across the globe. These are the people who are ready to stand toe-to-toe with that Grim Reaper and smile when they say “OK, pal… Let’s Dance.”

Rest well, my friend. I miss you more than I can ever express.

With sadness,

Jeffrey R Brosius

Shock and saddness filled my heart as word of the accident spread across the Phoenix Valley. It was only a few weeks ago that I looked out the window of my aircraft to see Air Evac 2 sitting on the tarmac at Gateway ready to go at a moments notice. It just isn't right that we are saying goodbye to another of our family members.

May the family and friends of Renee find comfort while feeling deep grief. Please know that you have a very large family who is sharing your pain. You have my most sincere and heartfelt sympathy.

To Susana and Kelly my wishes for a fast and complete recovery. May you also find comfort for your sorrow as you deal with your own pain. May all of you at Air Evac draw strength from each other, and know that your comrades across the Valley are thinking of you.

Flight is freedom in its purest form,
To dance with the clouds which follow a storm;
To roll and glide, to wheel and spin,
To feel the joy that swells within;
To leave the earth with its troubles and fly,
And know the warmth of a clear spring sky;
Then back to earth at the end of a day,
Released from the tensions which melted away.
Should my end come while I am in flight,
Whether brightest day or darkest night;
Spare me your pity and shrug off the pain,
Secure in the knowledge that I'd do it again;
For each of us is created to die,
And within me I know,
I was born to fly.
