       UW Med Flight

    On May 10, 2008, three University of Wisconsin Med Flight helicopter crew members were killed in a helicopter crash near La Crosse, WI. The helicopter was carrying Dr. Darren Bean, the flight physician, Mark Coyne, a registerd nurse, and the pilot, Steve Lipperer,

    In the terrible days that followed the loss of one of my dearest nephews, Raul Garcia, Jr., no words could fill the void that held my soul suspended.

    Perhaps this poem that I wrote in his honor will find its way to your heart, that you may find some way to know that their sacrifice was acknowledged by a powerful sense of love...

    Alone

    Alone in the dark skies
    You were

    Your soul and spirit
    Alone

    You sought the skies
    For solace and safety

    God’s face quickly turned toward you
    And entwined in His embrace you entered

    Holy ground…

    As a former flight physician with Cleveland Metro LifeFlight, I am well aware of the risks we take whenever we get into a helicopter to transport a sick patient. But we continue to do it, despite the risk, because our job, our passion is to respond to those in need, whenever and wherever that need may be. This crew of remarkable individuals has made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of that passion, and the outpouring of love, sympathy, and admiration that is evident through all of the comments on this page is a testament to that sacrifice. But the other reason we get into that helicopter, day in and day out, is because we love to fly, and I take some comfort in the knowledge that these brave men died doing what they loved. This particular tragedy is unusually painful for me, as I knew Darren, and his wife, Stacey, and Mark's wife, Desiree when they were all residents here at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. My deepest condolences go out to Stacey and Desiree, and all of the families, friends and colleagues whose lives will never be the same as a result of this unspeakable tragedy. May God bless all of you!!

    Carolinas Medical Center - Charlotte, NC

    With profound sadness we offer our condolences.

    Anita Nelson

    The words to describe this past week are inadequate, but I have taken some measure of comfort from reading all the posts on this board over the last few days. We lost 3 close friends, not just co-workers, last weekend, and I'm sure many of you know that bond we all feel because of the job that we do. What we do has some meaning, and we need to remember that. All the people from other programs out there who have taken the time to post their comments on this board I would like to thank, it is good to know that one is not alone in their grief, and that our professional "family" is there with us. I've read these comments with tears in my eyes, but it gives me a sense of purpose to carry on, and for that I thank all of you. We work in a special field, and the support I've seen from those across the country has been very helpful. Just as I tried to shake the hand, hug or say thank you to the flight crews who came to the memorial for Darren and Steve on Thursday, I'd love to personally thank all those out there in this trying time. Fly safe, watch out for your crew members, and try to take something positive away from all of this. What we do is important and has purpose, and we are lucky in that not everyone can say that.

    It always saddens our hearts to hear of such a tragedy. We feel the loss, not only from the Airmethods family but from the Air Medical Family. This community is a very small and close knit group. We all know the risk of our committment to what we love and the lives we impact each day. Sadly, an event such as this brings that all to well to our attention. Im sure the crew made many differences and impacted many lives during the course of their work. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families as well as the program during their loss.

    Flight is freedom in its purest form,
    To dance with the clouds which follow a storm;
    To roll and glide, to wheel and spin,
    To feel the joy that swells within;
    To leave the earth with its troubles and fly,
    And know the warmth of a clear spring sky;
    Then back to earth at the end of a day,
    Released from the tensions which melted away.
    Should my end come while I am in flight,
    Whether brightest day or darkest night;
    Spare me your pity and shrug off the pain,
    Secure in the knowledge that I'd do it again;
    For each of us is created to die,
    And within me I know,
    I was born to fly.

    Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
    Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
    Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
    Bring out the coffins, let the mourners come.

    Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
    Scribbling on the sky the message They Are Dead.
    Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
    Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

    They were my North, my South, my East and West,
    My working week and my Sunday rest,
    My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
    I thought that They would last forever: I was wrong.

    The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
    Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
    Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
    For nothing now can ever come to any good.

    W.H. Auden

These men will never be forgotten in our program or any other. They were the best of the best and for one moment we were given the opportunity to call these men our collegues and I will always be honored to have been given that chance.

    Though I've never met you, I feel a bond with you as we have shared the same sky in our endeavor to ease the suffering and preserve the lives of those who need our services. Your final mission makes us pause to reflect on the fragility of life and the ever present perils facing us as we pursue our profession. Only those of us involved in aeromedicine fully understand why we do what we do. I am honored to be counted in the numbers of the family to which you belong. My brothers, Darren, Mark and Steve, may you now fly high, fly fast and fly free of danger as you travel to sit with God. To your families, friends and colleagues who you leave behind, I pray you find strength to work through your grief and solace in your sorrow knowing that your loss is felt and shared by many.

    I am a flight nurse with Med Flight. I cannot find the words to express the hopelessness we felt when one of our helicopters was missing near La Crosse, WI. I heard Med Link Air could not fly so the crew got in their private vehicles and went out to search. I heard that firefighters and EMS were told after several hours of darkness and rain they should go home and rest and come back in the morning--but instead they went right back out to search some more. Today three hearses escorted by the State Patrol, Madison Fire, and the UW Police were met in La Crosse by hundreds of people, with EMS, Fire, & Police vehicles all along the route. We wish to thank all of you for doing for our family that we could not at the time. Although we have never met I believe the pain we feel is shared with each of you who helped us. Thank you all.

    Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
    And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
    Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
    You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
    High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
    I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
    My eager craft through footless halls of air.
    Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
    I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
    Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
    And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
    The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
    Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

    nobody likes the sudden departure of a friend or family member. it makes the good times now bad times. when these three people passed, they not only affected immidiate family but an entire community. the amount of people saved, treated, educated and just plain listened to is infinite. nurse coyne and med flight are the reason i fly today and i cannot thank him enough. through tragedy comes triumph and medflight will rise again as with each new mission all three are going to be watching as their legacy for flying and stellar patient care is continued.

    As I sit here and try to think of something original to say I realize that there is probably nothing original left. It doesn't really matter anyhow. There is nothing that could be said to ease the pain that all of the their family members, both by relationship and the fellow heroes that are out there every day risking their lives to make a difference to folks that they have never even met before. Thank you Darren, Mark and Steve and God bless you and God bless all of the members of both of your families.

    We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide; and though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, the Chain will link again. Rest in Peace our brave heros

    LifeNet Key West - Key West , Florida

    Once again here we are saying good bye to our loved ones, friends and collegues. Yet to give your life for others shows how fine and selfless you were. Far too often all the little things you have done during your shift go unnoticed, whether it be a smile or holding the hand of a sick elderly lady scared and alone. Now, these are the things that will be remembered, Of how fine you were and how dearly you will be missed, by your family, by your friends, by your collegues, and by all the peolple whose lives you have touched. Indeed you have earned your wings this day and shall soar forever more, the wind and earth beneath you, and nothing but clear blue ahead. Go ahead in peace, and by the grace of god we shall meet again when he calls for us. On behalf of the Spirit Medical Transport Services, St. Josephs and St. Claires Hospitals We shall always look to the skies and think of you and how fine you were.

    Jim Herron Flight Paramedic
