Re: Articles Supporting Air Medical Transport

Tracey,
There are lots of articles out there regarding the benefits of air medical
transport. Some report minimal benefit -some more - and some no benefit at
all. Unfortunately, no one (that I know of) has ever been able to control
for all of the extraneous variables. The first (really good)study I know of
was done by Baxt and Moody (The Impact of Rotorcraft Aeromedical Emergency
Care Service on Trauma Mortality) - that one reported a 52% reduction in
mortality rates for air transported patients. That was a long time ago
though (1983), and numbers since then have not been as dramatic. Some other
studies reporting a positive relationship are: Boyd, Corse, & Campbell
(1989, Journal of Trauma), Moylan, Fitzpatrick, Beyer, and Georgiade (1988,
Annals of Surgery), Jacobs, Gabram, Sztjnkrycer, Robinson, & Libby(1999,
Connecticut Medicine), Thomas, Harrison, Buras, Ahmed, Cheema, & Wedel
(2002, Journal of Trauma).

There are so many more articles out there - some with a broad focus - some
with a more narrow focus- most with different study designs. When I
researched this topic I simply did a literature search through an Internet
database such as Pub Med.
