Re: QA Question
Dan,
Our flight program uses three broad criteria when evaluating RSI and
Intubations: Indications, technique, and documentation. Items such as
scene time, ETT confirmation, choice/doses of meds, etc. would all be
included in the technique portion. Reviewing documentation includes
evaluating whether the chart is defensible, concise, coherant, and
contains the required pertainent information. When we evaluate
indications, we consider patient condition, flight time,
contraindications, etc. In our system, we work with EMS providers of
all skill and experience levels, in addition, many of our sending
physicians are extremely reluctant to perform RSI/Intubations due to
lack of local resources or personal comfort (hard to imagine in this
day and age). Indications for RSI/intubation are sometimes heavily
scrutinized when it occurs during an interfacility transport. I hope
that this is helpful. Good luck.
