RE: Cell Phones

STC is a euphemism that means there is a supplemental type certificate.
That means that the aircraft that uses a piece of equipment is not airworthy
until an STC has been granted. A type certificate is a guarantee that FAA
has found the a/c design to be flightworthy. It also places limitations on
who may provide maintenance on the a/c. All parts installed must be
approved under a technical service order (TSO). If use of an item (e.g.
electronic device during flight, such as a cellphone, flight operations are
restricted until fully documented and proven safe. Only then could an STC
be awarded (and only for that type of cell phone). So you can't just wire a
mobile into the a/c and get away with it....

OK... forgive my ignorance, but what does "STC'd" mean?

(i.e. "Their cell phones do not work on helicopters but are STC'd for many
types of fixed wing aircraft.")
