Let me mention an additional consideration with patients in custody. You do not to be without appropriate correctional officers and security arrangements at all! Remember, that it is entirely possible that the prisoner has a sham illness or survivable inflicted trauma in order to facilitate an escape/rescue effort. It is also possible that a prisoner who has assault trauma may have received it as part of a murder attempt and that "criminal associates" of the assault may be lying in wait to complete their task outside of the prison. (You do have those nice big public relations signs on your aircraft, right?).

It is necessary to maintain a different sort of confidentiality regarding the prisoner and his/her medical arrangements: all arrangements to be made with custodial staff and no disclosures of any sort within view/hearing of any prisoner, trusty, or other non-official person. This is protection for you, as well as the patient.

                Sincerely,

                        Tom Trimble, RN
