Re: Transport of ventriculostomy patient

Of those ventric patients that I have transported, we have also monitored
ICP's during transport. As for the ventric, we temporarily (less than 1
hour) clamp the drain for ground transport to the fixed wing aircraft - once
the patient is loaded and we reach altitude, we re-level the drain system to
the prescribed level and then unclamp the drain. The reverse is done for
decent and ground transport to the receiving facility. Our neurosurgeons
tell us there are no adverse effects to temporarily clamping the drain.
Hope this helps.
