Every program sets its own standards regarding the qualifications to become a Flight Nurse. Most programs want 3 to 5 years of experience in Critical Care, ER and some prehospital time. Becoming a practicing EMT or Paramedic helps as well.
My program would like you to be certified in ACLS, PALS, PHTLS or BTLS, obtain your CFRN within one year of hire and get your NRP. We also have to maintain nursing licenses in several states because we cross state lines to respond to scene flights.
The CFRN exam is open to nurses who have been in the flight job for at least a year and it helps if you are a member of ASTNA.
Heather's response was on the mark, check out the ASTNA website and you will get a wealth of information.
I am also sure that many of my colleagues will be happy to respond to make your project a good one.
