Hi Nicole;
An excellent resource for you would be the FAQ page on the Air
& Surface Transport Nurses web page http://www.astna.org
This page has general requirements for becoming a transport
nurse (air or surface), recommended certifications etc... A formal
position paper regarding the recommended eductional requirements for transport
nurses will be published on the website in the next few weeks (editing is
ongoing) so check back frequently and good luck with your
assignment!

Subject: Certification requirements for
flight nursing?
Hello. My name is Nicole DuPree, and I am currently a
junior nursing student at the University at Buffalo in New York. I
have been "lurking" on this listserv for a few weeks now to learn a little
bit more about various career opportunities in nursing. As an
assignment for one of my classes this semester, we are supposed to pose a
question and receive responses regarding an issue of my choice.
Therefore, I was wondering if anyone could explain to me how one exactly
becomes a flight nurse, how many years of experience you would need to
become a certified flight nurse, and the different types of
certification/licensure that you are required by law to possess in order
to be considered eligible for this position. If I am correct in
saying so, I also have noticed that EMTs and paramedics are able to work
in this role as well. Please correct me if I am wrong, I really am
ignorant as to the requirements of the job. If anyone if available
to explain a this information to me, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you and I look forward to hearing your
responses.
Sincerely, Nicole DuPree Junior Nursing Student,
University at
Buffalo
