Re: HIPPA and Patient Follow-up

Jeff,

The release of follow-up and patient out come information is not a HIPPA
violation if it is used as part of your QA/QI process. The problem you will
likely run into with attempting to obtain this information is unit nurses
that have not been properly trained in regard to what is and is not
acceptable under HIPPA regs. Many facilities that I have seen simply told
their personnel not to give out any info to anyone outside the facility,
instead of actually training them on what HIPPA actually means. I have
found that "Trauma Coordinators" are helpful in obtaining info if you run
into a problem as they are usually well versed in the true meaning of HIPPA
due to their responsibilities of collecting and reporting patient data.
