I also think that with some states laws as well as the new HIPPA regs that
go in to effect on March 14th unless the family has a durable power of
attorney for health care they don't have much say unless the family member
is a spouse. This is especially more so in an emergency situation as life
comes before different opinions that inevitably come from family members.
As do all the protocols I've worked with in the past say take the patient to
the closest appropriate medical facility. All allowed family input if
appropriate.
In the example it was pretty simple. You had a Level 1 trauma patient. With
equal distance they go to the level 1 hospital.
I would just make sure your protocols are well written and that you medical
director will back you up.
