To everyone,
I obtained my information from my pilots who are
all former military. This is the information they provided me when we were
considering the change in fabric. That is what I get for believing them! I was
also told that Nomex must be line dried to maintain the flame retardant by a
flight suit representative. I must say that the cost of Nomex can be prohibitive
to smaller programs and when full Nomex undergarments are not worn, there is
still a major risk for burns. Unless the suit is completely zipped to the
collar, Nomex undergarments are worn, and the sleeves are left down all the
time, it is still almost a wash when deciding between Nomex and Poly-cotton. I
do not profess to be a chemical expert. I was just passing on information that I
have been told since I began flying. I can also tell you that I have seen some
flight crews in Nomex suits so tight they could barely more and so loose you
could fit another person in them. There must be consistent sizing to offer the
best protection also. When provided with the facts that we had and the cost and
discomfort, my team decided to go with Poly-cotton and are happy with them. But
I do thank everyone for the information.
