A ground service I worked for has had adult IO
cannulation as part of their standing orders for a number of years before the
sternal devices ever stepped into the spot light. The protocol called for
the placemnet of a standard Jhamshidi in the illiac crest of the
hip. I was still working for this service when the sternal devices
came into the picture but the Medical Director opposed switching to a
sternal device and opted to maintain the current protocol. Just some food
for thought.
