According to A New System for Sternal Interosseous Infusion in Adults
(Macnab, et al. Prehospital Emergency Care 2000; 4:173-177), "the
best site for interosseous infusion in adults has not yet been
determined."
There's lots of good info about the red vs. yellow marrow, cortical bone
thickness, proximity to central circulation addressed in the article.
Additionally, preferrence for sternal IO placement is the low incidence of
fracture to the manubrium.(unless your bashed up trauma patient with no veins
had a CABG).
Please have your research librarian locate the article, as I'll go broke
faxing it to everyone. Perhaps I can get it scanned and then I'll post
it.
Fly safe,
Mark
