Re: Aeromedical Prisoner Transport

We recently re-wrote our policy for transporting prisoners (we have actually
landed at a local correctional facility rather frequently to pick up
patients - weird feeling landing inside the fences!)

The patient is always secured with some time of restraints - as we do not
rely on the stretcher straps as a restraint. The correctional officer will
always accompany the patient - and his weapons are secured in the cargo
compartment, well out of reach of the prisoner.

If we are transporting a patient who is in police custody (not already in
the correctional system), then a law enforcement officer is required to
accompany, in order to maintain custody. His/Her weapons are secured in the
cargo compartment also.

One of the personal reasons that I have for insisting an officer go along,
(even if the patient is intubated/paralyzed) is that I am not a trained law
enforcement officer and can not legally maintain custody of a prisoner.

Hope that this helps.

This topic has come up recently and I was wondering what everyone else's
policy or procedures were when it came to the transport of prisoners? Do
you or don't you transport? If you do how do you restrain individuals?
Will you only transport if they are intubated? Do you take law enforcement
officers or prison guards on the flight? If so what do you do with their
weapon?

Safety, its an attitude you can live with!
