Re: Intubation Requirements

Kie, could you enlighten us on this "Airway Cam" ? Would be very
interested in finding out how I can get this.

Jeremy,

At Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center's Transport Team, we
require all new team respiratory therapists to complete 10 successful
intubations to be deemed "intubation certified". Of these 10, 3 must
be
on neonates <3 kg. They can be done either in the OR or on transport
under the observation of an accompanying transport MD. Once
certified,
they are required to maintain competency by performing atleast 1
intubation per quarter on transport or in the OR. The team is also
required to review a video called "Airway Cam" yearly (by the way,
this
is an excellent resource for pediatric airways, and I highly recommed
it).

Intubation certification for transport RNs is voluntary not mandatory.

Our program currently requires each team member to have one successful
intubation every quarter. If an intubation is not completed for that
quarter the team member must report to the OR to complete one
intubation.

I am looking for information on how different flight programs maintain
intubation skills. How many intubations are required each quarter,
month, or year at your program? Do you allow intubations to be
carried
over to the following quarter, month, or year? If an intubation is
not
completed how are intubation skills maintained (manikin, OR, etc)?
Does
your program require additional intubations for team members who
perform
pediatric/neonatal transports? Any information would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks in advance.
