Why does this myth prevail?
Fluid dynamics has the Garfield Principle... Fluid flows faster thru a
short, large catheter... i.e. a 14G, 1.25" IV. A central line does not
allow faster flow of fluids.
For those who want the specifics: Rate of flow is directly proportional to
the fourth power of the internal radius of the catheter and inversely
proportional to the length.
I do understand that not everyone has veins that will take a 14G, but to
think that a central line is more conducive to rapid infusion is erroneous.
