Re: Femoral central venous lines.

I too am working on our OMD about central lines.
Here's what I have gotten from other programs;

1. Indicated for rapid volume infusions, high-dose
inotropes, multiple failures at PIV's

2. Placed femoral, IJ, then subclavian (last resort).

3. Femoral placement contraindicated in suspected
pelvic fx, along with other typical contraindications for
the procedure.

4. Training done in animal lab, didactic class on
comparative anatomy. Must have 2 successful
placements per 6 mos for currency, or take a trip
to the ER/ cath lab.

5. 7 and 8 fr percutaneous introducers used.

6. Procedure performed by either FRN or FPM.

Our program has option of PIV, RIC catheter, and
FAST 1 sternal IO. Agreed that the need may be
limited, but "any port in a storm".

Keep me posted on what you're able to scrounge
up.
