Re: Hazard Pay

Slave Lake, Alberta (Fixed wing) instituted a US$35/flight (C$50) following a runway overshoot/crash onto a frozen lake (~1 hour response to find) with minor injuries a couple of years ago. All other fixed wing programs in Alberta do not have any hazard pay (despite two other programs with aircraft write-offs in the past 3 years) as it is felt that it could lead to increased risk taking - accepting flights that should not have taken off in order to get the cash.

More likely cause of inappropriate launches is the contractual set-up with the Provincial Government that fines a program US$350 (C$500) if they miss their 30 minute launch window for either aviation contractor or medical crew causes such as a delay to get actual report/accurate patient info from the sending facility etc. And the attitude that P.F.C.C. has that they command - you fly, which tends to pressure pilots into launching ahead of actual weather and 'giving it a try' then returning empty PRN - as then their company makes some money and they don't have to fill in a report because of a refusal.

I am new to this list so this might be something talked about recently, if so let me know.

I am conducting a survey of programs that pay some type of hazard pay to staff.  I am mainly looking at hospital based programs that pay the flight staff a transport diff over what other staff of the same credentials would make in another area of the hospital.

Also, I would be interested to know if you have staff on call from home, are they paid for this time and if so at what rate?

Thanks for the information,
