Re: Handheld GPS

We use the Golden Hour Data Systems software at our program. Part of the
systems utilizes a handheld GPS that we download after the flight for
actual miles flown vs line of sight. We bill the actual miles flown. This
increases our loaded mileage by an average of 4 miles per flight. The
additional revenue adds up pretty fast ( 4 x loaded flight charge x
#flights per month x collection rate ). The system works very well for us.

Contact the folks at Lifeguard in Albuquerque, NM. They have been doing
this for some time now, using a handheld GPS unit and standard GPS desktop
software to document their actual loaded mileage flown rather than the
typical point to point straight-line method that many programs use. Those
extra few miles can really start to add up, depending on your flight
program's volumes, lengths of flights, etc.

Another option that is less labor intensive (but more expensive) is to
look into one of the Automatic Vehicle Location systems. These satellite
tracking systems can do the same thing, but you get the added benefit of
your Communications Center knowing exactly where the aircraft is real-time
during the flight. The extra mileage that can be billed for can be used to
offset the expenses of such a system.
