We have not forgotten.
We are stronger.
We will continue.
We will not stop.
It's been a year now since a group of people created the worst act of
violence on American soil, using our own people to kill more of our own
people. These individuals... these animals... these bastards attacked us in
a particularily cowardly way, hoping that the blow would cripple our nation.
They wanted us to fear them. They wanted us to respect them for what they
could do. They wanted us to crumble.
But we have not. We have not been crippled, but rather we stand stronger
than before. We fear no one. Indeed... come to us and challenge us, and
you shall see - and feel - our wrath. We do not respect those who act in
such cowardly ways. We did not crumble, but rather we stood up, leaning on
each other for support. And as we stood together, we found that there is
indeed strength in numbers.
We gave of ourselves on a scale that was unprecendented. Only a week prior,
the blood supplies were at critical levels. After, the lines to donate
stretched for city blocks. Fire stations had food delivered; police
officers were told "thank you' by strangers for no apparent reason; EMTs had
people walk up and shake their hands, saying "God bless you for those things
you do;" the Firefighter was once again a noble profession, and one to which
children - as well as adults - would aspire. Money... the influx of
donations came at amazing speed. Never before, or since, have so many
American citizens given so much to strangers.
Petty squabbles were set aside for a time. We no longer worried about such
trivialities as a teen singer that showed too much skin, or which ball team
was better. Things we once thought were critical became mundane.
Our president made it known that we would fight back. The decision was made
to send our soldiers into harm's way. Not an easy decision, to be sure. We
support them with silent prayers and wish them a safe return.
We learned a new definition of a hero. Athletes were pushed back to make
way for firefighters, police officers, and EMTs. Then we learned that we
needed to make room for a few more: ordinary, everyday citizens that just
ahppened to be on an airplane. Those heroic people stood together and said
"No. You're not going to kill Americans with this plane. Not while we are
here." There, friends, are the true heros.
We stood together through this horrific event. All Americans: Whites,
Blacks, Asians, Latins, and Europeans. All Americans: Christians,
Catholics, Pagans, Muslims, Baptists, Buddhists. All Americans: Yankees,
Southerners, Midwesterners, West Coasters. All of us. Every damn one of
us.
To those that instigated those attacks: You wanted to attack America?
Well, here we are... all 260 million of us. We stand together. Always
have. Always will.
We have not forgotten. And we never will.
