RE: EC-135 vs BK-117
We also use both aircraft in our program (2 EC-135s and 2 BK-117s). Let
me start by saying I completely agree with most points made by
SNev68@aol.com.
We have experienced all the same issues mentioned including an AC unit
rated to only cooling the temperature by 15 degrees despite several
"upgrades", the fold-up stretcher having problems with stability and
even getting it into the aircraft is a task, and weight is more of an
issue with the EC.
On the plus side, it is a MUCH smoother ride and available with a 3-axis
auto-pilot (some pilots love it, and others seem to avoid it at all
costs). Combined with the GPS system, the pilot can simply set a
destination and the aircraft will fly the entire route once you get to
altitude.
We do IABP flights in the EC as well as the BK - just a different
bracket and the pump goes in on it's side for us in the EC.
If you get it spec'ed out properly (vented windows, Ferno stretcher,
etc...) it can be a very nice aircraft. The visibility seems much better
in the EC and the added safety of an enclosed tail rotor is nice.
I have heard mention of an EC-145 being developed which combines some of
the aspects of the EC-135 and the BK, but I cannot confirm this...
Anyone have any information on this?
The BK is a great aircraft as well with time-tested reliability and more
available power, but the ride is a bit rougher than the EC. (although we
can actually get it to "snow" in the back on occasion... :D )
Hope this helps...
