IABP Questions

I believe that this has been covered in the past and I just didn't pay attention, so I'll ask again.  How many services are flying ballon pumps? How often (x/month)? What kind of feed back do you get per flight ( QA/QI)? Do your crews do them or do you take a Tech/profusionist with you? How do you secure in the aircraft? What do you do if you have difficulty during transport, do you call your Medical Control Physician (MCP) or a profusionist and who do you take orders from if needed?  How do you remain current?

Rational for this is our service has cut two MICU's from service, who has been doing the majority of these transports.  Since we have fewer transport vehicles, IABP runs more will fall on the aircraft.  We will have minimal experience with the pumps and will not receive any feed back, positive or corrective.  Just concerned with this practice.  We have a clinical meeting next week hopefully going to cover this topic, please if you feel more comfortable e-mail direct to me or post to the forum for all to see.

Thanks,

Mike Smith
