Re: Crics

Ditto for TraumaOne in Florida.  We don't use kits either and we have 100% success with the surgical crichs, which are performed as last resort to unsuccessful intubation.  We each carry a scalpel and a 7.0 ET tube.

Hi Brian,
We at Loyola Lifestar(Chicago) have had the crich as
our only backup airway for the past 14 years. We do
have a high success rate with intubation around 96%
but we do have 3-4 crichs a year. We have had 100%
success rate with our crichs. We do cadaver lab 2
times a year to stay current with the procedure. We
use the #10 scalpel and it is our choice to go
vertical or horizontal for the first cut. Some like to
just punch through the skin and membrane with one
slice and others like to go vertical and visualize the
membrane and then puncture it. We use a cut #7 ETT. We
have tried the kits on cadavers and the crew thinks
the scapel is easier.
Hope this helps
