RE: Best Helmets- Follow-up question
I use one and have had it for about 6 months. This is my first helmet,
so I have nothing to compare it with, except I compared it to the ones
the Forest Service helicopter crews are using and it is much lighter.
They were drooling over it, but apparently it has not been approved yet
by OAS. I also use it with NVG and it works well.
Downsides? I have used a Bose Active noise reduction headset for years.
In the helicopter it is nice and comfortable. I once logged, yes logged,
over 13 hours in one day in my R-22. I flew from Colorado to Oshkosh. I
do lots of long cross countries. The CGF is comfortable for long
flights, my longest day so far is about 8 hours flight time, continuous
except for fuel stops. Heat is no worse than the headset. Noise is a
problem though. The hush kit is pads that go around the bottom of the
ear helps some. They have another option that is a small microphone in a
roll up ear plug with a little wire that plugs into the helmet. I tried
that instead on ANR but do no like it. After a couple of hours,
especially if it is hot, it becomes uncomfortable for me to have this
thing crammed in my ear. It does help a lot with noise though. So, I am
going to send my helmet back and get ANR installed. I would suggest
anyone buying them that fly a lot do the same. ANR is well worth the
money, you only have one set of ears.
