John the New Guy - not just a flight nurse

Thank you to all who responded to "John the New Guy" as your insight has
been helpful. I will always welcome feedback and suggestions regarding
getting started as a flight nurse until the day that I become one. I just
wanted to respond to a recent posting that made me realize that perhaps my
verbage was chosen with too little thought, and may have been misunderstood.
I love nursing! While I call ER and ICU my "sentence," it is in good faith
as I know that I will continue to work in those areas as well. My 8 years
as an EMT and 5 years as a paramedic has taught me that it's not all
"excitement" and yes one does become numb to the thrill once given by lights
and sirens. With 4 years of experience as a ground transport nurse, I
understand and recognize the challenge of interfacility transport. My hope,
for those of you who hire, is that you see people like me, as determined to
achieve their goals. I'm sure that whatever it is that attracts us to
flightnursing is very powerful because this field has to have the lowest
turnover within the nursing profession. With that said, surely there is
something about being a flight nurse that does not wear off. I can
appreciate the concern that there are 911 adrenaline junkies out there, who
don't understand what "real" nurses and "real" paramedics truly do, and yes
a good interview should weed them out. With my resume and passion for this
field, I look forward to the interview process.
Please continue to send advice or feedback to me at johnf@wi.rr.com
Thanks.
