Re: John the new guy

I read this post from "John the New Guy" with great
concern. It seems that John chose a career in nursing
primarily to become a flight nurse. There is nothing
wrong with having goals but I think we see too often
people are drawn to the field for the wrong reasons. It
seems that you should first love your profession and
then choose to work in an area you feel you may enjoy.
If you thought your "time" spent in the ICU and ER was
a "sentence", you are in for a disappointment. Although
a helicopter is a great place to work, if you don't like
being a nurse, you are not going to last long as a
flight nurse. Once the excitement wears off, you have
to be there for the same reasons you would be at the
bedside. When you added that you wanted to work at a
place that does mostly scene work, you again raised a
red flag. Anyone who has done this for some time will
tell you, scene work is pretty routine after you get the
hang of it. Interfacility transports typically
challenge you more on a daily basis. You seem to want
to take a few short cuts to get to your dream job. I
replied to this post because I think John's viewpoint is
one that many nurses (and paramedics) bring to the
interview. It is usually fairly easy to pick up on this
during the interview process and can hurt your chances
for hire. So John, sorry to be so hard on you-If you
like being a nurse, good luck with your career. If you
don't like being a nurse, it may be best to choose
another occupation.
As far as getting in contact with programs you may wish
to work with, try the AAMS program directory and send a
cover letter and resume to each.
