RE: Paramedics In-House

I work with a ground transport team based at one of the Chicago suburbs'
Level 1 trauma centers. We're contract employees of the hospital but
work extensively throughout the hospital. When not on transports, we
assist in the ER primarily with trauma patients. We also have extensive
responsibilities throughout the hospital. Some of our responsibilities
include starting difficult IV's that the RN's have had problems
starting, intubations when the anesthesia service is busy, Code Leader
in the absence of a physician or ICU RN, and assisting in the Cath Lab.
I'm relatively new to the team, but I believe that the concept of
paramedics in the hospital was initially met with resistance from the
nursing staff, but now they are highly reliant upon us as a resource.

Subject: Paramedics In-House

We are a Part 135 hospital owned and operated flight program. We have
two B200 King Airs and one Bell 230. Our flight program is currently in
the process of bringing flight paramedics in-house. Previously, we
contracted with a local ambulance service for both helicopter and fixed
wing paramedic service.

I'm asking for assistance from the group for information relating to
both job description and salary. We plan on utilizing the medics (as we
are currently doing) in the ER (when not performing flight related
duties) but would be interested to know if there are other areas of the
hospital they may work. They'll be primarily working 12 hour shifts
with some 24 hour call time.

In particular, I'm interested if anyone has encountered any JCAHO or
medical control restrictions that may apply to paramedics.
