Re: state wide dispatching

Greetings,

Here in New Jersey There are two helicopters assigned to bases in north and south Jersey.  NorthStar based at University Hospital in Newark and SouthStar based in Voorhees. Basically the state is split into two halves using the telephone area codes. Flight requests in the southern end are routed thru Gloucester County Communications while University Hospitals EMS receives requests in the Northern end. Both centers have 800- telephone lines. If one helicopter is on a job the Comm Center will contact the other comm center to ascertain if they can take the job. Therefore the ground units only need to make one phone call for aeromedical and do not (nor could they) need to make multiple phone calls. Out of state resources such as Statflight, PennStar, or Univ Medevac are called by the regional comm centers if a NJ helicopter is not able to take the flight or further units are needed.
