Re: MDs for field amputations

what about also calling someone (maintenance for industrial accident, large vehicle mechanic, etc.) to disassemble whatever the patient is trapped in?  Obviously it is LIFE before LIMB! But if the patient is maintaining their vitals, etc. then the time it would take for either the doc or the "mechanic" to arrive might also be considered.......

Why would you have to send a doc for a field amputation? If it happens that frequently I would think training your own personnel to do it would be a better alternative.

I am posting this question for a friend, so please reply to the list, not
me personally.
I believe I've seen a bit of discussion on this topic in the past, but
can't recall any resolutions or suggestions given.

Thanks,

>The question is: Does any flight program have a policy or
anything set up and in place for when they are asked to fly a Dr. to a
scene for a field amputation? Do they have special equipment and drug packs
ready to go and are the flight crew trained in how to be assistants if
necessary? Also, what kind of meds do they carry out with them.

We get about one request a month to fly a surgeon out and it is always a
goat rope. The docs don't know what to bring with them or where to get it
and they don't even think about drugs until we mention it. We are usually
delayed by about 20 minutes while the goat gets roped and we are looking at
how to stream line this.<
