Is this "standard"
Recently, a person calling themselves Chief Flight Nurse, posted the
following messages on the Justhelicopters.com Forum. They were unsolicited
and not in response to any other threads on the forum. Indeed they initiated
the threads. The general demeanor presented "flies in the face" of MOST of
the attitudes I've personally experienced as an EMS pilot. I'm really
curious if it is actually representative of a "predominant attitude" of air
medical crewmembers who are a "silent majority" or if it is an aberrant
theme.
Here are the messages:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Let's see... Our pilots make $42,500 per year and work 12 hour shifts on a
7-7 rotation. Their pilot monthly summaries indicate they average 18 flight
hours per month. That equates to $196 per flight hour -- about what a
psychologist earns per hour. What's the problem? They're being renumerated at
'professional' rates for their efforts. Unless they want to be reimbursed for
time spent sleeping, watching Larry Springer, eating cafeteria meals,
visiting JustHelicopters.com, etc. Quit your f&cking whining already!"
"AND they're 'off' every other week. Seems like a hell of a deal to me! I
work two different jobs at my hospital -- for a total of 76 hours per week.
That's 6 x 12-hours shifts EVERY week -- with NO week 'off' every other week.
Please introduce me to some professional helicopter pilots who conduct
themselves AS professionals -- rather than the whiney-babies my program has.
By the way, I work for San Antonio AirLife. 1-800-AIR-MICU if you're sending
resumes"

>From time to time during my employment as an EMS pilot, I've been solicited
by my medical team members to try to "rein in" a pilot or two who have become
"rogue entities" in their professional lives. I'm wondering if this is a
good time to seek a little "quid pro quo".
Thank you all for your time.
Fly safe, M.
