RE: Survey

If your crew quarters are on campus, you may be able to store blood
products. The Blood Bank may not WANT to allow you to store it. Many trauma
centers, including mine, carry blood in the department for years. We have 8
units in a blood refrigerator in the resus room, with the standard paper
disc thermometer and the refrig alarm that rings in the ED and the blood
bank located 1/4 mile on the other side of the complex. The BB personnel are
responsible for the QAM checks, and we are responsible for replacing the
used units as needed. All is ABA approved. We have had a recent visit, and
all is within the standard.

There is a thin margin of deviation from protocol, and we have over the
years followed it via the PI process without any major issues. A breech in
the ABA standards can result in suspended blood administration hospital
wide, so it is a big commitment for all departments. On the positive
note-the added inconvenience is counteracted with what is best for patient
care. That is the bottom line.

We get Emergency Release Blood from our Blood Bank and transport it. We
investigated storing it in our Crew Area, but Blood Bank would not allow.
