Re: request for training programs in upper midwest - help

Mr. Bailey,  After having worked in the industry for 15 years and the nursing industry for 20 some years all in critical care I am well aware that a 2 week course will not make a flight nurse.  That being said I really don't know what the intentions of what these individuals want for training or if they are already flight nurses and want additional training.  I was asked to post to the list to see if there was a flight nursing class in the upper Midwest.  I suggested the advanced trauma course for flight nurses, however there isn't any courses coming up in the Midwest any time soon.  I just wondered if any programs had review coursed or canned orientations that they might be willing to offer our friends from abroad after talking to this consultant to see what they are looking for.

I know they frequently send nurses over to take our TNCC, ATLS courses as they think they are better over here.  I wish I had their educational budget.  I am assuming that they are interested in continuing education for their existing flight programs..  Anyway, since you don't know of any programs I don't think you will be of much help.

I also agree with your assessment of prior experience to becoming a flight nurse.  I am surprised though that you left out a  trauma ICU since that is a better share of most programs business.  It is my experience however that most people don't come with all of that experience prior to becoming a flight nurse.  As long as they have had 3-5 years of good, busy ICU - ED experience with critical thinking skills they will probably make a great flight nurse.  You can train them to do the rest.  At least that is my experience.
I would consider ourselves to be a "busy" program.
