If you wish to utilize Microsoft Office programs, you can still do so
with the Palm OS platform. Documents To Go comes bundled with new Palms,
and various other programs are also very functional (Quick Office,
Wordsmith, etc.). You don't have to use the Pocket PC platform just
because of a need to work with Word documents or Excel spreadsheets on
the handheld device.

This is a very common question and is really the first decision someone
should make when considering purchasing a PDA for personal or
professional
use. There are a number of articles, reviews, etc. online that address
this, such as:

The main thing to consider is what you intend to use it for. If it's
mainly to store and display information (ie. medical & drug references,
dosage calculators, etc.) then the Palm OS is preferrable. If it's
mainly
to duplicate the desktop PC environment (working with MS Word, Excel,
web
surfing, etc.) then the Pocket PC is the way to go.

In our situation, we decided that the Palm OS suited our needs the best
and have distributed a PDA to each flight crew member. They are mainly
used for displaying medical references including our own treatment
protocols, drug dosage calculators, and various databases. A few are
having good luck with doing our narrative charting on them and printing
directly to a laser printer.
