RE: radios
The Spectra is a great choice. A little pricey even used, but hey, RW
services have all the bucks, right? Hehehe
The Syntor X9000 series of Motorola radio (predecessor to the Spectra
line) can be found on ebay or from other good re-furbishers and the
800mhz models go for very cheap. The Syntor is a much heavier radio
(about 25-30 lbs for the "drawer unit" ) but can be mounted remotely,
has a very nice alpha-numeric control head, and commercial adaptors are
available to interface them into RW avionics / ICS systems from several
companies. If you have the weight available, you can have a dual-band
syntor custom made so you have 1 control head, and push a button to
switch between 800mhz and either VHF or UHF (sorry, no tri-band
available) AND control an external siren/pa, if your ship is so
equipped. You may even be able to add a mini-repeater, so you take your
walkie with you to the scene, and have full wattage output power, by
transmitting to the radio in the ship which then re-transmits to your
base/hosptial all of your transmissions.
I can be contacted off the list (tom@tomwaters.net) for some of this
info if you need.
Happy Flying!
Tom

Hey Mark.
We have 800 MHz on board our EC135. We use a NAT control head with a
Motorola Spectra 800 MHz radio (mounted remotely with the other radios).
It works fine with the local fire/rescue's trunked 800 systems - same
range as our VHF radios. Don't know the weight but I'm quite sure it is
less than 50 lbs. It was installed by Metro Aviation in Shreveport, LA.
Good luck
