UPDATE RE: Comments/Opinions

Looks like this will never happen again!!

CANADIAN NEWS

** Last weekend’s brouhaha over the Manitoba Lieutenant Governor using an air ambulance for standard transport, while a critically ill newborn had to wait for hours to be moved to Winnipeg, has resulted in a change of policy regarding medevac aircraft. The Winnipeg Free Press (David Kuxhaus/March 16) reported that Government Services Minister Steve Ashton announced Friday that politicos will no longer have access to air ambulances for non medical transport. Ashton, who has since apologized to the family of baby Ryan Rachuk for the foul up on March 8, said he announced his decision prior to the completion of a formal policy review because he wanted to prevent similar future incidents. Ryan Rachuk was just hours old when an enlarged heart, liver problems, and blue spots on both his internal organs and skin dictated a move to more sophisticated care. A medical team was flown to Flin Flon to ready him for transport to Winnipeg. During this anticipated lengthy prep time, the Governor General was flown from The Pas back to Winnipeg. A spokesman for Liba said the plan had been to get the plane returning to Flin Flon by the time Rachuk was ready to fly. However, bad weather intervened and delayed matters.
