Even the services that say they require only 3 years, often find such a response to openings they typically can be choosy...I would say at least 5 years plus other resume enhancing credentials as a minimum.  At least for an established service.  I don't know if CAMTS has any position on this.

 You are looking at at least five years ground 911 time.  I have heard of some programs that only require 3, but most require at least 5 and are extremely competitive.  Get all the experience you can, in a variety of settings, if possible and get the "alphabet soup" after your name, i.e. ACLS, PHTLS, PALS, etc. and consider becoming an instructor/trainer at your service or for some of the classes you enjoy.
