James, About 5 years of high call volume 911 EMS to start. It is a good idea to have your ACLS, PALS, trauma course, etc. Also consider instructor rating in at least one advanced level course. Another good idea is CCEMT-P or some type of critical care course under your belt. Most hospitals offer basic critical care within the hospital for there nurses but it's usually open to medics, it helped me a great deal to have this when I started. I am trying to prepare myself to enter into the competitive market and would like to know realistically when I can expect to be truly considered.
