Hi Angie,
I have gotten all of my mannequins from Medical Plastics Laboratories. They are as close to "real" as a mannequin can get in my opinion. However, I have found that the important thing is not the slimy and gooey of realism. Even a little stiffness is okay, although the MPL dummies are pretty good at that too. The reason that the mannequins work better than actual OR time etc. is the fact that the learner can concentrate on technique without worrying about the " patient". You can stop someone, while they have the scope in the mouth, and show them what they are doing right or wrong.
I have developed a program that never uses real patients nor does it require any number of intubations per year to re-cert. Everything is done on the dummies. I came up with it after teaching many classes and kitty labs etc. I use this for my team RCPs. We did a QI comparing the RCPs to the residents ( who do get the OR, kitty labs and unit hands on) and the therapists do much better on success rate and our definition of success is on first attempt. Our data is published if you are interested. Check out Peds Emerg Care Feb 2000.
I have also taken this program on the road. I have taught it at several different hospitals ( which is also a perk to using only mannequins) and so far getting very positive feed back. Even had an ol'pediatrician sit in on one class and raved about it, said he picked up some tips that have really improved his skills as well.
Okay so that was more than you wanted to know huh?

Kathleen - what mannikins are you using that work and act like a kid being
intubated - the ones I have seen are either incredibly stiff or no where near
correct anatomically?
