Sternal IO
We carry the FAST 1 Sternal IO system and are very pleased with it. When we implemented it last month, we inserviced all of our AMP staff and as a policy attach the removal device TO THE PATIENT. We tape it to the patient's chest and ensure that it is transferred to the Trauma staff in the ED. We also implemented a Local Antiseptic Protocol to use with this. It includes 1% Lido injections and/or sedation.
I still feel confident in obtaining a EJ if need be, so I personally do not know if I will ever be afforded the opportunity to use this, but it is once again a back up to a back up, and nice to have aboard! I would be more than happy to assist other programs in sharing our Protocol we adopted with the Sternal IO, as well as the Local Antiseptic protocol.
Safe flying!
