Re: helmet vs. headset
From what I've seen (and I'm on the ground, guys) helmets would tend
to give better protection in a crash or bird strikes vs a headset.
Just to give you all my perspective, I've known guys that have had to
eject from military aircraft, who had to go through the canopy.
Without their helmets, they would have died. Period. Granted
helicopter helmets are built a little differently, but they still
will offer greater protection than just someone's skull.
Oh, and no, I wasn't in the military myself. My dad was and we all
knew each other pretty well. Basically, I knew all the pilots and
B/N's or ECMO's and their families. Very small community, even
outside the squadron. Once something happens, ALL knows about it. In
detail.
And I'd rather choose a helmet over no helmet any time I'd be off the
ground. If I eventually get into flying, either private pilot or as a
medic, I'll use a helmet. May look funny as a private pilot on the
ramp, but I'd prefer to keep my head intact...
