With the Salt Lake City Olympic Games opening in just a few days, MERGINET
brings you a heartening update from Brian Garrett, director of Olympic Fire
& EMS. Like any consummate emergency provider, Brian is humble yet confident
that the safety team has planned as best as is humanly possible. Let the
Games begin!
Also this issue, Mona Vanek examines the elusive trait of professionalism.
Blending well with this article is Don Wetmore’s management piece on goal
setting. Jeff Robinson provides a refreshing field-provider’s review of Zoll
’s new M Series monitor defibrillator. And New York area EMS pioneer Harriet
Weber is remembered in an obituary by Laurie Hood.
Our regular columnists, including John Mateus, Karen Thurlow, John Becknell,
and Steven Carlo for NAED, have sent a great array of thoughts, ideas, and
perspectives. Straight Talk asks you, “What’s Your Priority?” And our
popular legal column, Law Bytes by Steve Wirth and Doug Wolfberg, is back!
Finally, can you help your editors? Is your service planning something
unique and inspiring for EMS Week in May? Let us know so we can report on
it! Email us at editor@merginet.com.
As always, please don’t be shy about sending us your Reader Feedback. We
appreciate your thoughts and ideas. We also enjoy your compliments! Everyone
who writes gets a reply as promptly as possible.

>> 9/11 Aftermath: Where the Donation Dollars Go (01-18-02)
by Tonya Schafer, Editorial Assistant
If there's anything charities have learned in the wake of September 11, it's
this: Don't promise one thing and deliver another. Fox News' Bill O'Reilly
opened a metaphorical can of worms on November episodes of The O'Reilly
Factor when he attacked the United Way and the American Red Cross for the
ways these groups had been handling their relief funds.

>> Let The Games Begin! (01-18-02)
by Kate Dernocoeur, Editor
They've had three and a half years to plan, procure, and piece together a
moderately sized fire/EMS department that will function for just three
weeks, and then disband. They imagined everything that could possibly go
wrong, and created reasonable response plans. Then the unthinkable happened
on the East Coast, so they put on reconfigured thinking caps, and thought
and planned some more. Now, the eyes of the world are turning to Salt Lake
City, Utah and the focus on public safety is like a laser.

>> EMS Pioneer Harriet Weber Dies (01-18-02)
>From a press release by Laurie Hood
For 44 years, Harriet C. Weber, 85, of High Falls, New York (near Kingston)
unselfishly devoted her life to developing EMS systems throughout Ulster
County. In 1958, Harriet called for an ambulance for her mother. She was
shocked when, instead of an ambulance, a hearse arrived to take them to the
hospital. That moment changed emergency medical service in Marbletown and
Ulster County forever, because Harriet vowed to remedy the situation.

>> STRAIGHT TALK 55: What's your Priority? (01-03-02)
by Kate Dernocoeur
If there were ever a time to talk straight, it was during the mass chaos and
fear of September 11. Stories abound of calls made and received out of the
World Trade Center, and from the doomed airliners in Washington, D.C. and
Pennsylvania. With millions of people as unwilling participants, many
reached out to touch someone telephonically to say, "I'm OK." Or not.

>> Steps for Positive Goal Setting (01-03-02)
by Dr. Donald E. Wetmore, JD
Audiences consistently tell me they want more out of life. Almost everybody
I speak with has a yearning to improve several aspects of his or her life.
They have dreams and goals about their future as yet unrealized. Many come
to the end of life with those visions unrealized, pictures in their minds
only.

>> Building Routine — Don't Neglect the Little Things (01-18-02)
by John Mateus
He was obviously nervous. He clutched the emergency response bag tightly in
his hand as he ran down the hallway. Every year he had signed up for the
company first aid training — mostly as a way to get off work for a day — but
he never thought he might someday have to use it.

>> Accentuate the Positive (03-18-02)
by Steven M. Carlo, College of Fellows Chair, NAED
All over the news lately, we've seen evil. Somehow our enemies have moved
closer toward us than ever before. There may seem to be so much evil in the
world that it's hard to find positive things to think about. However, here's
a good thing to consider: The "Golden Rule."

>> Infections in the Elderly — Part 1 (03-18-02)
by Karen L. Thurlow, RNC, BSN
Infection in the elderly is associated with both morbidity and mortality.
Atypical presentation of common infections, the presence of co-morbid
conditions (e.g., COPD, CHF, and diabetes) and immune senescence (a
progressive dysfunctioning of the immune system) all complicate the
diagnosis of infection and increase the opportunity for poor outcomes.

>> Take This Monitor to the Tracks (01-18-02)
by Jeff Robinson, NREMT-P
It is 5:40 AM. On the table in front of me sit a cup of tea, an English
muffin, and an M Series monitor defibrillator from Zoll Medical. You might
observe this to be an odd combination, and you would be correct. However,
this was not another breakfast.

>> Law_Bytes: Can We Have Our Supplies Now? (01-18-02)
by Steve Wirth, Esq. and Doug Wolfberg, Esq.
The restocking of ambulances by hospitals and health care facilities has
attracted the Office of the Inspector General's (OIG) attention for the past
several years, beginning with Advisory Opinions published in 1997, followed
by publication of a proposed "safe harbor regulation" in 2000, and
culminating in publication of a "final" safe harbor regulation in 2001.

>> For Operations:
Manage Critical Resources with your Communications
Center — Part 1 (01-18-02)
by Lauren Simon Ostrow and John M. Becknell
Today's EMS systems face the ongoing challenge of meeting response times and
providing high quality patient services while also achieving greater levels
of efficiency. This challenge has industry analysts looking for answers in
the powerful way in which communication centers manage system resources.
