Re: 24 hour shift
Todd
We at Mercy Flight Central are also primarily working 24 hr shifts, two each pay period for a total of 48 hrs. The staff really seems to like this arrangement due to the fact that it bascially gives them five days off each pay period. In addition, we have some folks that drive a considerable distance to get to thier assigned base and it makes it more worthwhile for them to do the 24 hr shifts.
We do not currently have a maximum number of pt. contact hours, but crews are only allowed to work a maximum of 24 hrs unless extenuating circumstances arise. In addition, our crews are restriced from working any other job in the 12 hours immediately preceding a 24 hour shift.
I think that the biggest issue with this type of scheduling arrangement is call volume. If you are flying multiple missions in a 24 hour period you may very well end up with zombies on your aircrew who have been up for the entire 24 hour period with no rest. If, however, your volume does not regularly present you with that scenario, then I think that 24 hour shifts can work very nicely and can be a good fringe benefit for your personnel.
