You share an interesting thought but what is driving the issue of working in
the ED is cost-sharing of otherwise non-productive hours (from a revenue
perspective) rather than education.
I would make the observation that one significant risk factor for aviation
accidents is a non-viable financial model for the program. Programs that do
not have a financial model with an adequate return on investment will not
invest in safety initiatives (including CRM)and further, in ways subtle and
non-subtle, will adversely influence fly/no-fly decisions.
>From a paramedic perspective, I'm aware that time spent in an ED while not
flying will not likely be personally rewarding in terms of skills practiced
or accolades received, but if the cost-sharing of my position puts the
program in a position to invest more heavily in safety initiatives on the
aviation side then I would argue I've done more to ensure my survival that
way than by embracing your Theory B.
