re:working in ER
Rollie, in answer to your question What are we doing now..we float to varying
units and help out with IV starts, codes in the ICU and in the ER and
Pediatric ER. We do not take primary patients and can come and go when we
need to, but management is considering having us be permanent ER employees
with our flight program leasing us when we have flights. When we have a
flight we would have to report off to someone on our patients, chart that we
did so, go punch out of ER and into flight program, change into flight suits,
go pick up blood from lab, and scramble to the ship. There is some animosity
in the ER as you can understand that we always leave when they are the
busiest...that's usually when we are busy too. We do about 500 flights/year
so there is quite a lot of down time. We are just trying to work out the
kinks and come up with the best way to do this and stay safe, while keeping
up with our other duties in the program, ie. community projects, LZ classes,
PR's, patient rounds, etc.
