Re: working in the ER
Our program encourages us to participate in the
er/icu, although not always is this possible, for
obvious reasons of transports. The attitudes that I
have encountered are of hostility towards the
transport personell when they are not able to assist
immediately. The transport RN has become an expected
scapegoat to call for patients going to CT, MRI, CATH
LAB, or so that the nurse can go out and smoke. We
don't take a patient load, and I do think that being
in these units helps to maintain some sense of your
skills. It shouldn't be expected that the transport
nurse is at the beck and call of other departments,
especially if there are duties and paperwork to be
done in relation to your primary job in the transport
dept. I would be interested to hear from other people
on how they work through this, or if there are
similiar problems.
