Re: LMA's



Our anesthesiologists use the LMA frequently
also.  Two  factors that rule out
the use of the LMA in our hosp. are....a patient
who may have had a bite to
eat or drink in the previous hours.  and or The
patient needs to be moved during the surgery.

Since what we do is move patients....and we
rarely can verify an empty tummy
the use of LMA seems inappropriate.

I am interested to know how they function when
the compliance of the lung
is decreased and the patient requires high
pressures to Ventilate.

Some new data has come to light recently about
ARDS.  The use of low tidal vol. and higher rates
to ventilate.  I believe 6 cc per kg was used.
Could any
RRTs address this to me personally or the list if
there is interest.  My understanding is the
outcomes were so much better a study was
discontinued
early.
