RE: Family Ride alongs

Janet,

I don't believe the recent "happenings" should effect your programs stance on ride alongs. Again, as it has been said many times that is what terrorism is aiming at............ the disruption of our normal way of life. Our programs stance has not changed at all, every flight is different and is assessed by the team (Pilot, Med Crew) for appropriateness of ride alongs. Especially flying out of a rural area as we do taking parents along is a huge issue when it would take them 3-4 hrs to drive to the receiving facility, I'd much rather take them along rather than potentially have to pick them up off a scene because they were speeding to the hospital. I also happen to believe it is better for the child and allows the receiving facility to get that information only a parent knows. The obvious exceptions to that rule being when it becomes a safety issue due to weight, parent behavior, ? alcohol/drug use, etc.. I would say trust your crews judgment and allow them the latitude to accept or refuse ride alongs.................. but don't let the terrorists of the world make your policies for you.

Subject: Family Ride alongs

I am trying to find out what other flight programs are doing concerning family/significant others who desire to ride along with a patient.  Taking into consideration the recent happenings, have programs changed their policies on this matter?  We decided to ban all family/ SO ride alongs until the situation calms down. We have been met with a great amount of anger from parent groups who feel they should be exempt from this policy and be able to fly along with their children. I am seeking input from other programs on what you are doing.  Thanks!!
